Level AWCAG 2.2

1.2.2 Captions (Prerecorded)

Captions are provided for all prerecorded synchronized media.

Why it matters

Hearing impairment
More than 430 million people worldwide have hearing loss. Without captions, they cannot understand video content.
Language barriers
Captions make videos in a non-native language easier to follow.
Sound-off environments
Videos can still be watched in places where audio cannot be played, such as public transit or an office.
Cognitive support
Receiving information through both hearing and sight improves comprehension and memory.

CC OFF
Captions are essential for making video content available to deaf and hard-of-hearing users. Better captions also identify speakers and describe meaningful sound effects.

Understand through a persona

Nakamura (32) — Moderate hearing loss

Uses a hearing aid, but cannot make out dialogue in videos with loud background music. Captions guarantee understanding. 'If a recorded meeting has no captions, I have to ask someone for separate minutes.'
