Level AWCAG 2.2

2.2.2 Pause, Stop, Hide

Users can pause, stop, or hide moving, blinking, scrolling, or auto-updating content.

Why it matters

Attention disorders
Users with ADHD and similar conditions are distracted by moving content and can't read the rest of the page.
Screen readers
Auto-updating content interrupts reading and causes confusion.
Low vision
Moving text is hard to follow, even with magnification.
Cognitive load
Automatically moving information is a major source of stress for users who process information slowly.

NEWS
WCAG 2.2 has been published as a W3C Recommendation

There is no way to stop the automatic scrolling, so the content changes before some users can finish reading.

If automatically moving, blinking, or scrolling content lasts more than five seconds, users need a way to pause, stop, or hide it.

Understanding through personas

Ito (19) — ADHD

When a news site's ticker is always moving, I can't concentrate on the article. A pause button lets me stop the motion and read calmly. 'Unstoppable animation is like loud background music.'
