2.4.1 Bypass Blocks
A mechanism is available to bypass blocks of content that are repeated on multiple pages.
Why it matters
Keyboard users
Tabbing through every navigation link on every page is highly inefficient. Skip links go straight to the main content.
Screen readers
Hearing the same navigation on every page is stressful. Skipping repeated blocks is essential.
Motor impairments
Each move takes time on a switch device. Reducing unnecessary Tab presses matters.
Efficiency
For every user, reaching the target content quickly improves productivity.

Skip links are usually hidden until they receive focus. They let users bypass repeated blocks such as navigation and move straight to the primary content.
Understanding through personas
Tanaka (55) — Upper-limb motor impairment
I use a switch device. On a site with 20 navigation links, every page requires 20 switch activations. With a skip link I can jump straight to the main content in one step.
